KVK Ri Bhoi organized Capacity Building cum Pre- kharif Kisan Sammelan for Doubling Farmers’ Income

 

TKVK, Ri Bhoi organized Capacity Building cum Pre- Kharif Kisan Sammelan for Doubling Farmers’ Income on 29 March 2017 at ICAR, Umiam. Shri James P.K. Sangma, Hon’ble MLA Dadenggre Constituency Meghalaya graced the occasion as Chief Guest. He spoke about attracting the youths of Meghalaya towards agriculture through generating awareness, improve knowledge, skills and competencies about technologies as a profitable venture as it is one of the core strength of Meghalaya state.

Dr Satish Chandra, Director i/c, ICAR Umiam, Meghalaya graced the occasion as Chairman. He urged the farmers to adopt IFS and value addition of local products. Dr B.C. Deka, Director, ATARI, Zone-III, ICAR, Umiam, requested the farmers to participate in the training programmes on post harvest, value addition and preservation of major crops viz., Ginger var.Nadia and Turmeric var. Megha Turmeric 1 having as high as 6.9-7.2 % curcumin content.

Dr. A. K. Tripathi, Nodal Officer of KVKs, ICAR, Umiam urged the farmers to identify their strength in relation to agriculture and emphasize on those strength to increase their income. Dr A. K. Mishra, OIC, NBPGR, ICAR, Umiam emphasized on creating awareness among the farmers about the ways to safeguard local bioresources. Dr Mokidul Islam, Head, KVK Ri-Bhoi requested the farmers for large scale adoption of ICAR technologies to enhance the productivity for doubling the income and livelihood improvement.

During the input support programme, about 1.5 q maize seeds (variety RCM 76) and 200Vanaraja poultry chicks were distributed to the farmers. The scientists of ICAR & KVK discussed about the cultivation of different crops in pre kharif and kharif seasons, crop diversification and intensification, scientific livestock farming (poultry & pigs), organic farming water management, processing and value addition and marketing channels. Scientists of ICAR & KVK, officers and about 300 farmers from ten different villages of Meghalaya were participated in the programme.
